No they did not tell me, it is the 16" version though. Looks pretty light to me.

A ripoff? No. I don't believe so. There are a LOT of guys on here that swear by the free float hand guards Jay and love em.

I can't have them on my AR10 because I have the front A-frame sight so they won't work on it but I've been talking with a small company recently about an AR in 7.62x39 for my wife (company will be announced when the time is right) and it will come with free float hand guards on it. Heck, if we do well enough on our taxes this year, I may even pick up an AR10 carbine or maybe even a twin to my wife's rifle so I can do some cheaper shooting. I'm kinda worn out on anything smaller so a regular AR15 is out for me but I'm definitely looking at rifles with at LEAST the ability to go with Free Floats if I so choose - if for no other reason than to do some more research on my own.

We actually have quite a few threads on Free Float hand guards so you may want to do a little reading on them and see if they might fit your needs... :)

Perhaps, but its a dual answer. Free float as a technical approach to accuracy is and has been well known going back to the 50's. It works and brings a repeatable accuracy to a weapon.

That said is the FF HG on Armalite a rip off at $80 bucks, I won't try to pass judgement on that, I have the Armalite FF HG on mine and no complaints, it did come with it. There are a LOT of FF HG to choose from and they range in cost from less to more. I recommend it, but I do not recommend any model, let your desire and pocketbook make the call, not matter your choice you will benefit from it.

Most of these examples have more crap on um to make um heavier. Anyone besides me a minimalist? I sold my M1A to go lighter with the AR-10(T). I only use the bipod to clean and work on it. I am even debating a sling since I prefer ready carry when I hunt. No light, PEC-2, M203... :P

I agree...... I got my SASS from my nephew.... And I thought.. Woa... Dude this thing is so cool... After awhile.. It was... Geezzz..... This is a bloody 14-15 pound long gun.. It weights like 3-4 pounds than my 458's..... I'm not gonna lug this thing around.... Soo... Since I got it for free... it was way easy to rationalize getting a carbine.... Which is a really neat gun...
I'm keeping it simple.... A nice variable mid range scope... Hogue grips.. Maybe a short rail to hang a couple cool doodads when I want..... WaLa..... Very nice..... The only thing I don't like is the shiny barrel.......

But to be fair.... The big ones were designed more to be used in position.... And they perform very well for there intended purpose......

I have the basic AR10 rifle flatop. Nikon scope, bipod, and 3 point sling. This is what it does cold bore at 200 yards. Good enough for me.

So here is an updated pic with the scope mounted, got a good deal on a decent scope, Nikon Buckmaster...most likely will upgrade that later, only if I am unsatisfied.
Next step, bipod...and that's pretty much it I believe.
Also in the pic my brother in law's FAL.
