The A2 is the one with the standard Iron Sites. Google M16A2.
The A4 is a scope rail where the front site base is and on top of the upper receiver,...what's an upper receiver? :woohoo:
You can mount a scope on either, it's just easier/better on the "flat top" A4 version. They, you know, those guys they call "they" make clamp on iron sites for the flat tops (A4).
Google BUIS.
So, the BUIS, can they be used at the same time as the scope? I mean, look through the scope, then want to focus on something much closer, move your focus to the iron sites. Or is it more "use the scope, if the scope breaks, flip up the iron sites and use that until you can get the scope fixed"?

This is an A4 Carbine. In back of that Aim Point I can slap on a quick detach LaRue mounted Aim Point 3x magnifier. It has a swivel mount so I can pull back a tad and rotate it off to the right....
