Scope mounting

Scope mounting was created by STEWBUD

Evening All
I have a couple things I could use some advise on.
Question #1
I just purchased a Leupold VX-2 3-9x40 scope for an Armalite AR-10
carbine.
Being new to these toys I asked the salesman at Bass Pro Shops
for the mount that would work best with this gun.
He said to use a Weaver 1" medium rise [part # 49041] that came with 2 seperate mounting rings that attach directly to the picatinny rail.
When I tried to put it together, the scope does not seem to seat properly.
The front of the scope rides on the rear of the stock handguard & if I move it back it rides on the very front of the picatinny rail.
Is my problem as simple as getting a slightly taller mount & if so, should
I stick with a slightly taller Weaver 2 ring setup or switch to one with the rings connected to a solid base which connects to the picatinny rail?
Question #2
I am thinking of getting a Midwest Industries Gen 11 drop in handguard
[part # MI AR10CHG2] & wanted to know if it will have any affect on the above problem.
Thanks for any help

For #1, I don't understand the problem. Can you attach a pic?

The medium rings ought to work with a 40mm (and even up to 50mm) objective. Did you try mounting the rings on the rifle and dropping the scope into them? Eye relief is obviously going to be the first issue, but if you position the back ring such that the ocular is slightly in front of the charging handle it ought to be about right.

My understanding is that 2 piece rings have reduced repeatability compared to a 1 piece setup like the Armalite Ex0022 (about $85.00).

Unfortunatly I cannot post any pics.
I tried moving moving the mounts & scope as you suggested but the scope wont even go all the way into the rings.
I took the rings off to make sure they fit together & the scope falls right into the ring bottoms. but when the ring bottom halves are on the rifle the scope will not go all the way into them.

I forgot to ask what do you mean by reduced repeatability?

It sounds like one of the rings is whonker-jawed (not sitting square and level on the rail.

By repeatability I mean mounting and dismounting the scope, such as if you were using iron sights for close range but wanted to use the scope at longer ranges. We've got irons and EX0022 scope mounts for our Armalites, and I get excellent repeatability when switching back and forth. I have heard (but not verified) that 2-piece mounts are not as precise.

I had a similar issue with seperate rings, not as severe so lapping made it acceptable. I ended up with a Burris one piece mount, it is working great for repeatability, so far I have not seen a difference when I remove and replace it. I have not shot past 200 yards with it yet but so far so good.

Hey guys,
I had a buddy more familiar with ar type rifles check everything out & he agrees that my mounts are simply not tall enough.
It looks like I will be going with something like the Burris or Armalite's ex0022 1 piece mount.
Thank you both very much for helping me out

The EX0022 will accept up to a 50 mm objective with a couple of mm left over. See...

www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?item=EX0022

We've got a couple of EX0022s, and have no problems with them. I recently got a 10805010, "ARMALITE 30MM SCOPE MOUNT ASSEMBLY, HIGH" for the new 10NMFA because I want to mount a Nightforce or Trijicon with a 56mm objective.

I confess. I'm a gearhead. Who knows why :) .
