Quick question

Quick question was created by Moreau

Was sighting in a rifle today and came to the point where I needed to adjust it "up" some more, buuuuut the dial was already turned as far as it would in the "up" position. Anything I can do? Remount it, put a small layer of foil in the under side of the front scope ring? I haven't had this problem before so I'm not to sure how to address it...

Thanks,
Joe

You can shim the scope or you can get taller rings.

You can cut shims from soda pop cans if you don't have any thin stock.

I would not recommend that for several reasons:
1) Alum is soft and over time under pressure will continue to spread thus changing its thickness

2) Alum has a high contract/expansion rate due to temps

You can buy shims at many hobby shops out of brass which is far superior to alum.

Alum I guess would do in a pinch, but you will be in a constant adjust mode...

Something just does not add up,......what rifle, rings and scope?
You should not be running out of elevation. Are you sighting in at 1k meters?

It's on my Sig 716, .5 inch riser rail, weaver rings, and leupold vx 2 3-9x40. Now that I think about it I think it had a shim in it, I just had no idea what it was when I took it off an old 30-06. I hope I can find the thing and didn't trash it.

Thanks,
Joe

Linear thermal expansion for:
Steel - 11,8.10-6/°C
Aluminium - 23,1.10-6/°C
Copper - 17.10-6/°C
Brass - 19.10-6/°C

A steel shim if you have to would be best :twocents: As far as that goes.
Although I have never run into this problem, Maybe ya got a bad set of rings or need to lap them in!

Its more the crush factor and 'flow' of soft alum. Tighten down on it and it will only get larger and thinner, not something you would want to shim up a scope...

There is no way you should have to shim it!

Either the mount, riser, rings or scope is SEVERELY jacked up!

I have run into that problem with adjustable pistol sights, but never with scope rings.
