I am looking at a thermal scope for some Texas hog hunting. I am looking at a FLIR brand with the following:

Can anyone explain what the practical difference is and if it would make any difference in hog hunting?

The practical difference will be in the sensitivity of the detector. Think of the eye piece like a TV or computer monitor. The images in the 320x240 scope will be less defined than the 640x480. To use video games as a reference, it would be like comparing the graphics of Doom to the Graphics of Doom 3.

If you know someone with a thermal scope, I highly recommend you get with him/her and look through the scope before dropping major coin on one.

I was very happy with my dealings with Armasight for my NVGs. They also sell a line of TWS', you might wanna check them out and call or email them about thermals, I'm sure they could give you good info.

Hunting pigs is fun. It's more fun at night, with suppressors and NODs. It's the most fun at night with NODs from a helicopter.

I appreciate the feed back. FYI I am in the wrong generation to know about the difference between Doom and Doom3. never heard of them, but I got the gist of it.

Everything I have read about FLIR is good, but I have yet to look through one of their devices. When it comes to optics (and pretty much everything else) it pays to demo the product before you buy.
