Pictures of my Win Mag was created by That_Guy

Well, I'm getting the rifle ready for the smith' this week and decided to take some pictures before it gets the new barrel. I didn't do any editing to the pictures whatsoever, just had some awesome lighting. Pretty impressive for a phone I think!

Thanks man. I'm just glad that it will finally be finished! I will post pictures of the MDT advanced recoil pad for the PRS tomorrow. It's really nice to have, as I shoot mostly from prone.

That's a sweet looking set-up you have there. What model of Vortex is that, and who makes the level?

Thanks man! It's a Vortex Viper PST 6.5-24x50mm and Vortex makes the level.

I wonder what something like your rig in 7 mm Remington Magnum would do? That is such a flat shooting round, I am kinda surprised it hasn't been developed tactically by the military services. Maybe I am missing something about it that someone can enlighten me on?

Sisco, you are correct to ask the question, I checked some ballistics on the Hornady web site, I had to compare the Win Mag using 150gr SP interlock, and for the &mm Mag a 154gr SP interlock.
I will give you the Win Mag first at 400, then 500 yards.

.300 Win Mag @ 400yards MV=2197; FT# energy=1607/ @ 500yards MV=1965; FT# energy=1286

7mm Rem Mag @ 400yards MV=2212; FT# energy=1672/ @ 500yards MV=2029; FT# energy=1406

The ballistics for 0 to 300 yards is the same,but 7mm drops 2" more at both 400 & 500

I suspect the reason it is not used is something I heard on another forum. Heavier weight bullets of the same caliber fight crosswinds better. So I am thinking the smaller diameter 7mm is harder to compensate for. Then again why it the 6.5 Creedmore so popular for longrange shooting.

Bill

NamVet:

6.5's are also popular because most people are kind of wimpy and lazy when it comes to learning how to control recoil. ;)

Seriously though, the smaller calibers are much more forgiving of poor follow-through and shooting positions. There was a thread over on Sniper's Hide in the Semi-Auto section where someone was asking about building a sub-moa M14. Everyone was telling him it was a waste of money, except one guy. I can't remember why but I think he was a Marine. He replied:

"There are lots of sub-moa M14's out there. Mostly they belong to M14 shooters."
