I can sympathize as a 70 year old retired Master Sergeant and Viet Nam Vet I would like to go back on active duty but "Lots of Luck" And I can see their point. They don't want us old farts around telling them how it used to be, even if it ran batter back then !
The reality is it is time to let the young guys do it, not because the spirit isn't there, but father time catches up to all of us. Evry generations war is different from the past ones, but they all deserve our respect for their service and sacrifice.
Funny, I remember my Dad saying something like that to me many years ago. I guess us old farts have to pass the baton like he did. I'm just glad we still have those willing and motivated people doing what many won't.
