Cowboy,.......I still soak the entire BCG in carbon cleaner. I bought a can at the Ford dealership about three years ago,......no Government Motors trash enters this house.

Do you think the Ruger design with the piston forward was driven by that....my guess is it is.

Very well may be, there are a few that have the piston out front like that.

Ruger's "piston" is actually more of a control valve. The piston, the part that takes the energy from the gasses and converts it to movement, is actually the push rod, which is located under the hand guard. Which is a PITA to remove. If i remember correctly, AdamsArms supplied Ruger with the bits and pieces for a short time. Then Ruger came up with their designs. The heat issue is that the gasses are exhausted at the hand guards

I am resurrecting this thread now that I have an AR10T carbine platform like the one above to serve as a base.
I am thinking of a Magpul PRS stock. Question: Would I need to replace the spring buffer and extension tube? Magpuls website states that carbines with removable stocks need to replace theirs but mine is a fixed A2 stock. Anyone know the answer? I do have an email into Armalite Tech support.

Buffer assembly stays the same. There is a .223 and .308 models of the PRS. The difference is the .308 model has more clearance in the cheek riser to allow for the longer throw of the charging handle.

Nothing additional needed since you have an A2 stock installed. Be SURE you buy the AR10 version of the stock and NOT the AR15.......they are different!

Thanks guys, I know about the AR 10/AR15 difference, I just want to make sure that their is nothing else going on as far as the buffer assembly and the recoil spring before I order. Might make a quick call to Mag Pul tech support as well, but I am pretty confident you both are right.

Thoughts on barrel coatings as that stainless barrel gives a high profile Visual signature. Melonite, cerokote,, or just some high temp flat black paint? Any other coatings you can think of?

I would tend to avoid melonite. While it works well as a finish, there have been issues with barrel extensions loosening due to the procedure. This issue will necessitate a new barrel extension be fitted to the barrel.

CeraKote would be my pick. Simply having the barrel matte bead blasted would be an option as well. Paint would be the cheapest and allow it to be done by you, but does not wear very well and is not resistant to chemicals and cleaners.

Cerakote sounds like a good way to go. Gotta start investigating it.
