RRA is making an AR lower with an AK magazine well now. They're the only ones I know of off the top of my head though.

Modularity doesn't make sense for everyone. I mean. I don't know how many times I've heard it on this site: "What do you want the rifle to do?" If your answer is honestly: "Everything," then this might well be the system for you.

Personally, I wanted the Cobb Manufacturing modular AR more than the MGI, but mostly because the magazine well choices didn't limit you to short action rifle, or pistol, cartidges. They made a magazine well and uppers for .308 length cartridges. They even made a version in 30-06 that took modified BAR magazines. Saw one once at a gun show and it just blew me away. Then again, I'm also all excited over the LOSOK Valkyr: losokcustomarms.com/pages/valkyr.php, so that may just be a personal quirk.

Am I seeing that right? A long action M1A? That is freakin cool. I think KAC makes an AK lower 47 & 74. I know nothing about them though.
True, you are correct "what do you want your rifle to do" is a frequent question. It is also important. I don't know how many folks I know on and off line that bought or built a rifle with no direction and ended unhappy. The majority of the time, it's too long an heavy for 99.9% of the shooting a person is going to do. I'm in that pickle myself, I have not had a chance to go out and do the long range thing in so long that I am having a hard time justifying keeping my sass.

I can't help but think the added level of modularity is a good thing, even if I can't find a place for it myself. Then again I am speaking purely from speculation, having no first hand experience with it.

Ok I ripped apart the rifle to show how it works.

This is what it looks like with the forend on and the locking system unlocked.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. It is a BIG help, and I learned something new. Looks like you can pull the barrel pretty quick, that is a definite plus.

Awesome pictures. :)

Remind me: Does this system use standard AR barrels, or are they proprietary?

I meant modular as in the lower. Kinda like the new Colt. I can see swapping uppers or changing barrels like with the LMT. I personally, have no use for a modular lower receiver.

Two bolts, a mag change and possibly a bolt to change caliber a with the LMT
