The best advice I can give new reloaders is start simple with a single stage press and pistol calibers. One of the best calibers to start with is 45 ACP - it's big, has a straight walled case, and doesn't take a whole lot of powder. A single stage press is slow, but until you get familiar with the process, slow and steady wins the race.

I also recommend getting a data book like Lyman's or Hornady. They have step by step directions on how to build a cartidge.

That's good news. I got a Lyman book with my new Lyman 1200 tumble.

OK, to start off with, you'll need a press. Scales,a powder dispenser,a set of dies. I would recommend Lee. You'll get the shell holder with the dies. Use full but not necssary are case blocks, case mouth deberer and chamfer tool. You should have a reloading manual on hand, a good one is Lyman #49. It will take you through reloading step by step.I useually have four different manuals out at one time. I can compare the loads in each one.I use to clean the primer pockets, but I stopped and the reloads still went bang when I pulled the trigger. The only people who clean the primer pockets are the benchrest crowd.HTH.

Get "The ABC's of Reloading" book. A lot of good material there.

How about one of you guys just come to RI, bring your EXTRA loading gear, give me a week long seminar (block of instructions for us military types) and then forget to take your stuff home with you?

That sounds good and thanks for offering Leb, PM sent !!!!

Of course, I believe COLT wanted to learn how to fish for stripers and other "salt watery" types too so maybe I'll be able to strike a bargain yet.... :)

One thing about reloading, if you are careful, do it right and really clean the brass beforehand, it is amazing how long the ammo will keep. I loaded up 500 30-06 in 1979 with Sierra 165 gr boat tail soft points. Put some silica gel packets in the ammo can, and have been hunting with it ever since. My son and I go out every year and shoot a batch before hunting season just to make sure there are no issues. I have not changed the zero of my rifle for 33 years, and have yet to use more than one bullet to take my deer. When I run out if ever I will have an identity crisis.
