Great. I wish you the best of luck. Please keep me in mind I would really like to know how you like the gun in 243. I hunt a lot of chucks and would love to have a SA gun to blast em with. I'd really like to know about the down range performance\accuracy of the platform. I love my bolt action and single shot 243's but would like to get one in semi.

Gents,

I've been away a long time, but will weigh in...

The Melanite/"salt bath process sounds interesting, but for most is probably not needed. For those pushing the limit on a .308 based case it offers some benefits, IMHO. PROVIDED it's done correctly as you have noted.

This is one reason I still preach the .308 instead of a .243. Barrel life is alread excellent with the .308.

Boots Obermeyer was getting 6,000+ rounds with his barrels and the 6.5/.308(.260 Rem).

IMHO, the 6.5 is the way to go is you MUST shoot something smaller than a .308 cal in the AR.

Bullet/Cartridge OAL is another factor that has been mentioned.

I'm a dinosaur, but make mine .308.

For the rest of you...have fun!

Wes

I have the Armalite AR-10 in .243. Using Hornady SST I have found it to be an adequate deer rifle.
