Hello and welcome to AR10T, I must apologize for my lack of hospitality, I have been busy with my latest video project....
I would also like to thank you for your service to our great nation.
If I may, the set up you describe seems to be just short of a standard AR-10 T minus the 24" barrel, it comes with a 20". Given all that is involved with building such a rifle, you may think about ordering one, and see if they have a longer barrel you can have installed. Have you done a price comparison, I would almost bet you could get a T or SUPER SASS for what it will cost you to build it...
I am sure that MSH might chime in on this....he knows his guns...and parts and specs and so on....LOL  (MSH, that's a compliment)
Anyway enough of my rabbles, once again welcome to the site....

Hello, Guy here in Toledo, no really, that's my name, Guy. If you want to know how to build a 400hp Nitrous motorcycle, I'm your man, but I just started building my very first AR-10 and I'm an idiot. These boards have tons of great topics that I will be speding many a night getting caught up on I'm sure. If you want to get sidetracked, check out my gallery, Gallery

But back to business, so far I have a AR-10 lower with a Geiselle 2-stage trigger and all hardened steel pins. The upper is AR-10 with a Knights contract barrel Navy MK 11 from ADCO Firemarms

I have collected a dozen or so 20rd mags and 10 30rd mags. I'm collecting ammo as much as I can afford each week to fill up the safe. I am saving my pennies for a great long range tactical scope. I want to have a great hunting rife that can get them pesky deer when they hide behind those cinder block walls.

So I won't ask too many questions without first using the search function. I've already seen dozens of posts that will take me many evenings of my time.

Thanks again for a great site for us AR-10 noobs who can rub elbows with the real pro's.

hello all new to the forum. My name is Gary I"m currently stationed at Moody AFB in southern GA. Recently got done building my first ar-15. Not completely done with it yet still need to purchase my optics that I wants and few other little things. But I've also been wanting to build a carbine rifle around the 7.62x51 mm round. But I have a lot of questions. If you go around the internet looking for ar-15 rifles almost every website agrees on what it take to make a good ar-15. Like chromed line barrels, finishing, what material its made out of, barrel twist, and so on. I'm wondering do all those qualities that make a good reliable ar-15 make and good ar-10. And is there any places that have a list of all the things you should be looking for when piecing together an ar-10 from scratch?

Thanks
Gary

Well Welcome Crasher.....and thanks for your service to our country.
As to your inquiries as to the AR-15 to the AR-10, the answer would be yes....for the most part. Being they are the same....sort of, the 10 being bigger, it all comes into play when building one, basically. As to sites where you can find info....you are in the right place, you should find the answers to your questions here...just read and if you can't find it....post up a question..
I would have to say though, it depends on what you want to build.
Anyway, welcome and thanks for joining...

Howdy everybody. I'm Sam, from West By God Virginia. Currently stationed in Hawaii at the big pink hospital. I'm a medic, have been for 12 years. 2 tours in Iraq at Ibn Sina/Dogwood. I just ordered my 1st AR-10 over the weekend. I ordered an Armalite A4 Carbine with green furniture. I'm not too gun savvy but I can shoot to standard when it's range time. It's something I've always wanted to get into, and finally took the first step. I plan to use this gun at the range often, and hopefully this year take a pig here on the island, an Axis deer on Lanai, and maybe a whitetail back home in good 'ol West By God.

So, I bet you guys have never heard these before, but I have a couple questions...

1. How much trouble and money am I looking at getting into to convert to a free float rail.
1a. How much accuracy will I gain in doing so with a 16" barrel? Are there any other benefits to doing so that I don't know about?

2. How much trouble to change out the suppressor on this rifle? Are they welded or just screwed on?

The plan is to have a carbine type rifle upper, and eventually build myself a long range gun like the SSASS.

Thanks for building this site. I read through a few of your articles looking for the answers to the questions and it's great! I hope to someday be able to contribute to the knowledge on here, but for now I'll just pick your brains as much as you'll allow.

2Fast, well I have to say that it's nice to see that you have got plenty of reading material for awhile....
Welcome and hope to see how you fare with the plan for your rifle.
If I may say, NICE BIKE...a bit much for an old man like me.. I was always into the Harleys, had a couple of grinders in my time though...but nothing like that... :woohoo:
Once again welcome....

Thank so much. I do go a bit all out when I do things. This new AR-10 is no different. I'm saving my money for a good US Optics variable X17 x 50mm w/30mm tube tactical scope.
Damn, they're expensive, but good things are worth it I'm told. If someone has a different scope they like that is comparable to the US Optics scope, would like to hear your opinion. but since I haven't read all the forums on scopes yet, I'm sure there is plenty of reading material on this board.

thanks again for the welcome.

Sam I just made up some A10 barrels for the marines there in Hawaii. They have the tools to do what you want. They have an army.mil email address so that will give you a clue where they are at. Ask for Sanderson He can help you out. He's a pretty good with these rifles and can help you out. So work that end of it and or I can contact then and get you hooked up.MSH

Hello Sam, as I like to say to all our servicemen, thanks for your service to our country...and defending our freedoms.
As to your questions...there are many that could answer your questions with abit more "tech talk and experience" than I but I will start the ball for you...
As for trouble and money, well that all depends on what you want.
I think one of the best is the LaRue Free Float hand guards, cost is around $273 to 329.00 depending on the length.
stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Categ...tegory=AR+Handguards
as for the trouble to install it, well that I guess depends on your ability. Oh don't forget that depending on the length, you might have to swap out your gas block...
Being I also have a A4 C, I have put it in the sub MOA at 100 yards and pretty good at 2 and three, being a novice shooter. But being you are planning to go to a SASS upper type down the road I would say save the money and put it into the other upper...This is what I have on mine, a Midwest Industries drop in for the ArmaLite AR-10 A4 C....cost is about 2 bills.
www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?f...play&category_id=188
It will take some installing, you have to center your barrel nut but it is well worth it for the Carbine...check out the Articles tab on the top tool bar...for a look.
As for the suppressor, well that is a whole nother topic...
So I hope this has been some help, there are several here that can help you with the things that you want to know.
As for picking our brains, well that sounds messy  but post away with the questions....

BMS & MSH,

Thanks for the welcome, and for answering my questions. MSH I'll PM you my email address and if you can link me up with your buddies that would be awesome. I think I will go with the free float rail, which leads me to a few more questions...

1. If I wanted to go with a little longer rail than what the length of the handguard is, what parts will I need to order? I'm guessing at minimum the rail system + gas block. If you can give me parts numbers or link me up with a sales rep that would be ideal. Main reasons for doing this are increased accuracy and an uninterrupted top rail. If you can tell me that the accuracy increase is nearly unnoticeable or there are no advantages of having an uninterrupted top rail, I'll go with the two piece that you posted and save myself some money.

2. Are the suppressors permanently mounted on these rifles when they come from Armalite, or are they easily removable?

I have zero experience gunsmithing. Just throwing that out there... On the bright side I think I may have just gotten myself into the Basic Armorer's Course, hard to justify as a medical NCO assigned to the hospital but I'm 90% on it happening. I'm sure I won't get any experience on the AR-10, but I imagine it's an identical platform with larger parts to accommodate the larger caliber.

Thanks for doing what you guys do.
